Since the time of Abraham 5,000 years ago, Jews have inhabited the land of Israel.  During this time, the land was ruled by the Jews and by various conquering empires.  The timeline below highlights major events in the rule, expulsion, and return of the Jews to their homeland. According to mainstream archeology, this represents the first instance of the name “Israel” in the historical record.
